van Bommel

Wout van Bommel obtained his academic degree in physics, with specialisation in lighting, at the University of Technology in Eindhoven, the Netherlands. On joining Philips Lighting in 1972 he was first involved in fundamental lighting application research at Philips’ lighting laboratory. He is now responsible for the company’s “lighting application knowledge centre”. Some of the concepts he proposed on basis of his lighting application research are now used in international standards (e.g. semi cylindrical illuminance for residential area lighting, glare rating GR for glare prevention in sportslighting). The last years he has concentrated gathering knowledge on the biological effects of light on humans. He has been active in many different Technical Committees of the International Lighting Commission, CIE. He has been CIE Division 5 Director and is since July 2003 the President of CIE for the period 2003-2007. In 2004 he has been appointed consultant professor at the Fudan University in Shanghai. He has published more than 100 papers in many national and international lighting journals. He is the author of the book “Road Lighting” (translated in several languages). He has lectured and is lecturing in all parts of the world at the relevant lighting congresses, seminars and expert workshops. Whenever possible he likes to combine these activities with running: up to half the marathon.
